UFC Undisputed headed to Wii and handhelds
The buzz surrounding the release of THQ’s ‘UFC Undisputed’ was phenomenal, attracting good reviews from fighters, gamers and everybody inbetween. Building up the game from scratch THQ’s formula worked extremely well. Certain tweaks and mechanical changes will improve the game, as with any first attempt, but it was so well received the company are planning to expand on the number of platforms it is available on.
Currently, the game can be played on Playstation 3 and XBox 360. The franchise has sold well in poor economic climates where others have struggled and so the franchise is ripe for expansion. “UFC Undisputed,” which has topped two million copies sold since its release this spring, is the most realistic MMA videogame ever developed. With more than 80 fighters and dozens of UFC broadcasters, trainers and other personalities, the game has proven a major (and much-needed) hit for the once-struggling THQ.
Gaming site G4TV was on a call with THQ as they released their first quarter earnings yesterday. This was when they confirmed the game will move onto handhelds (although left unnamed) and the Nintendo Wii. The prospect of both is exciting and they also revealed the UFC game will be renewed annually with “new features and game modes.”
The Wii version of “UFC Undisputed” could be available as early as next year.
The UFC and THQ signed a multi-year deal to produce the game, and new and updated editions of the title will be released each year.
The game, though, will soon get competition from sports-videogame giant, EA Sports. As MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) reported on Wednesday, famed heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko will headline its “EA Sports MMA” franchise. Other non-UFC fighters such as Renato “Babalu’ Sobral, Gegard Mousasi, Jay Hieron and Frank Shamrock are also expected to be featured in the rival title.
