Buffalo Girls – Slamdance 2012 Official Selection – Trailer from Buffalogirlsthemovie on Vimeo.

Directed by Todd Kellstein, above is the trailer for “Buffalo Girls,” a documentary on professional Muay Thai fighting children in Thailand. Prepare to be shocked!

Here is the official synopsis from the filmmakers:

Buffalo Girls tells the story of two 8-year-old-girls, Stam and Pet, both professional Muay Thai prizefighters. Set in small villages throughout rural Thailand, the film chronicles these young girls’ emotional and sometimes heartbreaking journey as they fight in small underground arenas to win prize-money to help provide for their families. After many months of training and a long schedule of fights, Stam and Pet fight each other for the 20 Kilo championship belt of Thailand and a cash prize that will change the winner’s life forever.

The film is also an official selection in the Slamdance 2012 Film Festival for documentaries. No word yet on how everyone who can not make it to that film festival can see this film, but let’s hope it does well enough that we can get a DVD release of it. You can stay up to date with this documentary at their official website.

Looks like it’s going to be a great movie. It’s a bit of a shame though that 8 year old girls feel then need to fight to earn money for their parents.

At that age, it should really be the other way around (the parents taking care of their kids instead).
