Enson Inoue shows off his new tattoo of 108 shrines

MMA fighters love tattoos of all varieties, and typically we have no idea why they get them. Thankfully, today’s tattoo has a meaning that most hardcore MMA fans will remember and is actually a very cool and honorable piece of ink.

Former Shooto Heavyweight Champion Enson Inoue embarked on a spiritual journey earlier this year, walking the 88 Temple Pilgrimage (八十八ヶ所巡り or hachijūhakkasho-meguri in Japanese), which is Japan’s most famous pilgrimage route, a 1,200 kilometer loop around the island of Shikoku. Many are content to do this in convenient tour buses, but not Inoue, who actually walked the entire route! In honor of this tremendous feat, the UFC & Pride FC veteran got some new ink with the map of his sojourn, which he shared with us on his facebook page. The tattoo, which he had done yesterday, includes the number 108, which is the number of shrines he visited on his walkabout, and 1400 for the number of kilometers he walked. In other words, he is an overachiever since he walked an extra 200 miles to visit an additional 20 temples. Now that is hardcore!

Hit the jump for a few more pics of the tattoo. Also, yamato-damashii!
