CNN explores women’s MMA this weekend
Next week, CNN is going to be airing a special on women’s MMA, entitled “Fighter Girls”. The trailer looks to be focusing a lot on the sport aspects of women’s MMA,and not necessarily painting things as human dog fighting, as the mainstream press so often likes to do. Looking at things from the women’s perspective might do some good humanizing the sport to the general public.
The show’s description mentions it is “following four riveting stories”, one of which we can assume is Michelle “Diablita” Gutierrez. It would be a shame not to get some camera time with Carano or Cyborg for a special like this. Having the top names of women’s MMA represent really could be some excellent promotion. They might however, be looking at the lesser known fighters, as their struggles for relevance in the sport are completely different.
I have to wonder about the timing on an episode like this. Seems a bit late to the party. With the future of mainstream women’s MMA hanging by a thin Strikeforce thread, I’m hoping maybe something like this may spark up a bit of public interest. The special airs October 28th at 8pm and 11pm ET on CNN.
